Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has endorsed the appointment of Rev. Msgr. John Opoku-Agyemang as the Bishop-elect of the Catholic Diocese of Konongo-Mampong. The Vatican last week announced Rev. Msgr Opoku-Agyemang as the successor to Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu who retired at 76 from the pastoral care of the Diocese.
The Manhyia Palace was formally served with the news on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Reverend Gabriel Justice Anokye and the Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi Rev. Msgr. Louis Tuffour.
Introducing him, Most Reverend Anokye sought the blessing of the Monarch for the Bishop-elect who he said had been in pastoral business for 40 years now.
“It’s all good news. Roman Bishops retire at 75 years. Bishop Bonsu of Konongo Diocese is 76 years old and has retired. In his stead, Pope has appointed Very Rev Msgr John Opoku Agyemang…Our visit today is to inform His Majesty about it and receive his blessings.”
Asantehene who has been familiar with the endorsed appointment expressed confidence in him.
“He has served in all previous positions and he has been hard-working. He is not new to me and God has decided to honour him this way. I believe he can do the work with all his experience and knowledge.”
He also urged him to exhibit humility.
