Short History

The Catholic Church in Mamponteng was established during the First World War by a veteran soldier. It happened that during this war, one Opanin Kwadwo Barnie of blessed memory was forced to join the British Colonial Military forces at a youthful age of eighteen. He served as a steward of the officers at Keta. After the war, he came back home carrying with him the Catholic Religion which had gained roots in Keta. What began on a small scale in the 1920s grew rapidly. By the year 1970, the church had spread to twenty-four stations within the District. The Church was still under the pastoral care of St. Michael’s Parish at Jamasi. Mamponteng was curved out of Jamasi Parish due to urgent pastoral needs which called for a resident priest. The following priests have served as parish priests: Fr. Edward Scott (1974 – 1989), Fr. Francis Antwi Agyei (1989 – 1991), Fr. Peter Yeboah Amanfo (1991-2001), Fr. Cosmas Osei-Amponsah (2001-2009), Fr. Paul Attah-Nsiah. Mamponteng Parish has given birth to nine other parishes (Aboaso, Adanwomase, Ahwiaa, Atimatim, Bampenase, Fawoade, Kenyasi, Ntonso and Sakora Wonoo). It was raised to the status of a Deanery in the year 2004.
